What closes on a federal holiday
On a federal holiday, federal government offices close, as do most banks (they follow the Federal Reserve), post offices and, on most holidays, the stock market. State and local offices and schools often close too, but they decide for themselves.
Stores, restaurants and most private businesses stay open, often with holiday sales. Private employers are not required to give federal holidays off.
Post offices close on the federal holidays. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, the U.S. Postal Service closed post offices on that Saturday and kept them open the Friday before in 2026; its 2027 schedule had not been published when we checked, so 2027 entries are marked "expected".

Questions and answers
How many federal holidays are there?
Eleven, set by law in 5 U.S.C. 6103. When one falls on a Saturday, federal employees get the Friday before off; on a Sunday, the Monday after.
Does a federal holiday mean everything is closed?
No. Federal offices close and so do most banks and post offices, but stores, restaurants and most private businesses stay open. The stock market closes on most, but not all, federal holidays.
Do private employers have to give federal holidays off?
No. Federal holidays apply to federal employees and the District of Columbia. Private employers and states set their own holidays.
