Exact square sizes
Each sheet is drawn as vector lines at the stated spacing, so a 1/4 inch square measures a quarter inch when printed at actual size. The quarter-inch and 5 mm grids have a bolder line every inch or every centimeter to make counting easier.
Lines are a light blue-gray: dark enough to follow, light enough that pencil and ink stand out, and cheap on toner.
Check your printer scale
In the print dialog choose "Actual size" or 100%. "Fit to page" shrinks the grid by a few percent, which matters if you measure with a ruler. A quick test: measure four squares on the quarter-inch sheet; they should cover exactly one inch.
Questions and answers
What size is standard graph paper?
In US schools the usual grid is 1/4 inch (4 squares per inch). In metric countries 5 mm and 1 cm grids are standard.
Why are my squares slightly too small?
The PDF was probably scaled to fit. Print at 100% or "Actual size".
Can I use it for floor plans?
Yes. On the quarter-inch grid, one square per foot gives a common 1/4 inch = 1 foot scale.
