How bank holidays work
Banks are private businesses, so each one sets its own hours, but nearly all follow the holiday schedule of the Federal Reserve, which processes payments between banks. When the Fed is closed, transfers and deposits wait until the next business day.
The Fed closes on the 11 federal holidays. When a holiday falls on a Sunday, it closes the Monday after. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, it does not close the Friday before. In 2027 that matters three times: Friday June 18, Friday December 24 and Friday December 31 are federal days off, but the Federal Reserve Banks are open.
Post offices close on the federal holidays. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, the U.S. Postal Service closed post offices on that Saturday and kept them open the Friday before in 2026; its 2027 schedule had not been published when we checked, so 2027 entries are marked "expected".

Are banks open on federal holidays?
Most banks close on the federal holidays that the Federal Reserve observes. Some branches inside stores open anyway, and ATMs, online and mobile banking keep working.
Are banks open on the Friday before a Saturday holiday?
Usually yes. The Federal Reserve Banks stay open when a holiday falls on a Saturday. In 2027 that means banks are generally open on Friday June 18, Friday December 24 and Friday December 31, even though federal offices are closed.
Are banks open on Good Friday?
Good Friday is not a federal holiday, so banks are generally open. The stock market, however, is closed.
Are banks open on Saturday?
Many branches open Saturday mornings; the Federal Reserve does not process payments on weekends, so transfers wait until Monday.
