Which fiscal year applies to you?
The US federal government's fiscal year 2027 runs from October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027. Many states use July 1 to June 30. Companies can choose any year end; many retailers end their year on the Saturday closest to January 31, which is why the retail fiscal 2027 runs from January 31, 2027 to January 29, 2028.
In a 4-5-4 calendar every fiscal month has whole weeks: four in the first month of a quarter, five in the second and four in the third. Every few years a 53rd week is added to keep the year aligned; fiscal 2028 is that year.
