What is Rosh Hashanah?
Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year, the first two days of the month of Tishrei. In 2027 it opens the year 5788. It begins at sundown on Friday, October 1, 2027 and lasts two days, Saturday, October 2 and Sunday, October 3, both in Israel and abroad.
The holiday starts the Ten Days of Repentance, which end on Yom Kippur. Because the first day falls on Shabbat in 2027, many congregations do not sound the shofar on Saturday and blow it only on Sunday, as the tradition sets for a Rosh Hashanah that begins on Shabbat.

How it is celebrated
Families light candles at sundown, say the blessing over wine and eat a round challah, apples dipped in honey and other foods that stand for a sweet year. In synagogue the services are long, with the shofar, a ram's horn, sounded a hundred times on each day it is blown. Many people go to running water on the first afternoon for Tashlich, a short prayer of casting away sins; in 2027 that is usually moved to Sunday.
