How postal holidays work
The U.S. Postal Service closes post offices and stops regular mail delivery on the 11 federal holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day (Washington's Birthday), Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. On every other weekday post offices keep their normal hours, including on Black Friday, Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, Good Friday and Easter Monday.
When a holiday falls on a Sunday, the closure moves to Monday, the same as for federal offices: in 2027 that is Monday, July 5. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, the 2026 rule was different from the federal one: post offices closed on the Saturday itself and were open with normal delivery on the Friday before. Federal offices, by contrast, close on that Friday.
Hours of individual post offices vary, and some close early before major holidays. Package carriers that are not part of the Postal Service set their own holiday schedules.
2027 entries are marked "expected": they follow the 2026 rules, and the Postal Service had not published its 2027 list when we last checked (October 21, 2026).

Is the post office open on federal holidays?
No. Post offices close and regular mail is not delivered on the 11 federal holidays. Express services that guarantee delivery every day of the year can still run, and blue collection boxes stay in place, but pickups wait until the next delivery day.
Is the post office open on the Friday before a Saturday holiday?
In 2026 the U.S. Postal Service closed post offices on Saturday, July 4 and kept them open with normal delivery on Friday, July 3. In 2027 Juneteenth, Christmas and New Year's Day 2028 fall on Saturdays; following that rule, post offices are expected to open on Friday, June 18, Friday, December 24 and Friday, December 31, 2027. The 2027 schedule had not been published when we checked.
Is mail delivered on Black Friday and Christmas Eve?
Yes. Neither is a federal holiday, so post offices open and mail is delivered as usual, although some offices close early on Christmas Eve.
Is the post office open on Sunday?
Retail counters are closed on Sundays, apart from a few large mail processing locations. Some package deliveries happen on Sundays in many areas, but regular letter mail is not delivered.
Is the post office open on Good Friday or Easter Monday?
Yes. Neither is a federal holiday, so post offices keep their normal hours.
