Juneteenth National Independence Day is a federal holiday on a fixed date, June 19. In 2027 that date is a Saturday. Under the federal rule for weekend holidays, when a holiday falls on a Saturday, federal employees get the Friday before off. What Juneteenth marks
On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced General Order No. 3: all enslaved people in Texas were free. It came two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, which could not be enforced where Confederate forces held control. The day was celebrated in Texas and then across the country as Emancipation Day or Jubilee Day.
Texas made Juneteenth a state holiday in 1980. In June 2021 Congress passed, and the President signed, the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, making it the eleventh federal holiday and the first new one since Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983. Celebrations include readings of the order, parades, family gatherings, music and red foods and drinks, a long-standing tradition.
