The phases of the moon
The moon has no light of its own. As it circles Earth, we see more or less of its sunlit half: nothing at new moon, a growing (waxing) crescent, the right half lit at first quarter, a waxing gibbous moon, then the whole disk at full moon, and back through a waning gibbous, the last quarter (left half lit) and a waning crescent. One cycle takes about 29.5 days.
A full moon rises around sunset and sets around sunrise; a new moon is up during the day, hidden in the sun's glare. The first quarter is best seen in the evening, the last quarter in the early morning.
The printable calendar marks the four main phases on every day they occur in 2027. For the moon names and times in every time zone, see the full moon and new moon pages.
Questions and answers
What is the moon phase tonight?
The box at the top works it out from your device's date and shows the next full and new moon. The four main phases come about a week apart: new moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter.
When is the next full moon?
See the table below. The first full moon of 2027 is the Wolf Moon on Friday, January 22, 2027 (Eastern Time).
How long is a lunar cycle?
About 29.5 days from one new moon to the next (the synodic month). Individual cycles vary by several hours because the moon's orbit is elliptical.
