What is Yom Kippur?
Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day of the Jewish year. It falls on 10 Tishrei, ten days after Rosh Hashanah. In 2027 it begins at sundown on Sunday, October 10, 2027 and ends at nightfall on Monday, October 11, about 25 hours later.
The day is given to prayer, fasting and asking forgiveness. Adults in good health fast from food and drink for the whole day, and many avoid work, washing for pleasure and leather shoes. Children, pregnant women and anyone whose health would be at risk are not expected to fast.

How it is celebrated
Before sundown families eat a large final meal and light candles. The evening service opens with Kol Nidre. The next day is spent largely in synagogue, ending with the Neilah service and one long blast of the shofar at nightfall, followed by a meal to break the fast. In 2027 Yom Kippur falls on a Monday, so many people take the day off work and some schools close.
